Description:
Large, distinctly marked accentor, with white, rufous and grey coloration. Adult has rusty-orange band across breast. From Rufous-breasted Accentor by uniform brownish-grey head including throat, diffusely streaked upperparts, and unstreaked white belly (with limited streaking on flanks).
Distribution:
Locally common resident in the eastern parts of Baltistan region and Astore. Breeds in damp, boggy areas of scrub and grasses, often adjacent to lakes and streams, usually at 3500-4500 m. Preference for bare, stony and rocky habitats in winter.
Behavior:
Forages on ground, usually in open grassy places; commonly in small flocks in winter months. Diet mostly consists of small seeds and invertebrates, perhaps including small crustaceans; seeds predominate in winter. Mainly on beetles, earwigs, bugs, mayflies, and flies; also spiders.
